One of the four founding principles in the Velsicol Eesti AS mission statement
is "operating safely, ethically and with high social standards." Employee health
and safety is a priority in every aspect of plant life. Monthly training sessions
and workplace auditing, individual accountability for creating a safe work environment
and an annual risk analysis of the entire facility and operation systems
are conducted to continually improve safety systems and policies.
Emergency response capabilities are excellent. Every year, the facility
conducts a fully simulated test of the facility’s emergency response system.
The test could be for a simulated fire, personnel injuries or other emergency,
but it is initiated without warning and all response actions are conducted as
if the emergency were real. City officials and individuals from neighboring
manufacturing plants are invited to observe the tests,
which are also videotaped and often shown on the local television news program.
In addition, Velsicol Eesti employees have implemented the company’s
Pollution Prevention Code, a voluntary,
ongoing program that seeks to reduce manufacturing waste and emissions.
These and other efforts have earned the plant recognition for outstanding
achievements. In 1998, Velsicol Eesti helped pilot a European Environmental
Permitting Program. In 2002, the plant was recognized for two safety achievements
– five years of operation without a lost time injury, and 1 million man hours
without a lost time injury – both world class employee safety achievements.
Velsicol is also actively involved in the community.
